Old Omalo / Alt Omalo / Keselo

Omalo, the main village of Tusheti-region, consists of two settlements: Old Omalo (called Keselo) above and New Omalo below. It take about 10 to 15 min. of walking (exhausting, because the path goes way up) to get from the new to the old settlement.
The following pictures show the old part of the village. Many of the buildings are some hundred years old. This is quite astonishing if you look at the second picture: The walls are made of layers of stone only, no mortar was used. Often, some lichen or moss has overgrown the stones and roofs, which makes even stables in very poor condition, like the one below, look picturesque.

Omalo, das Zentrum Tuschetiens, besteht aus zwei Dörfern: Alt-Omalo (eigentlich Keselo) und Neu-Omalo. Vom tiefer gelegenen Neu-Omalo geht man 10 bis 15 min. einen steil ansteigenden Weg hinauf nach Alt-Omalo, das ihr auf dem ersten Bild seht. Viele der Häuser sind mehrere hundert Jahre alt. Das ist umso erstaunlicher, als die Mauern ohne Mörtel gebaut wurden - die Steine wurden lediglich sehr exakt geschichtet. Häufig sind sie mit einer Art Flechte der Moos überzogen, was selbst hinfällige Gebäude, wie den unten abgebildeten kleinen Stall, malerisch erscheinen lässt.
